Writing an essay is a fundamental task students have to deal with during their studies. It is a piece of writing that contains arguments and data about a certain topic. Despite being so direct, writing it can be a hectic task, especially for beginners.

Fortunately, education experts have provided some simple guidelines about how to write an essay.

In this beginner’s guide, I am going to help you understand these guidelines. I’ll go over the main steps along with examples that will help you write a perfect essay that has the potential of getting an A+ grade.

Let’s start.

What is an Essay?

In simple words an essay is a small piece of writing which is focused on a single topic. It includes personal views of a writer which they back up with evidence, logic, and statistics.

Although it has a simple definition, its nature can vary. For example, an essay written by an 8th grader will be a lot different than a university student. Still, its basic structure and intent stay the same.

Components of an Essay:

A general essay consists of the following components:

  • Subject:

  • Introduction:

  • Body:

  • Conclusion:

How to Write an Essay?

You can write an essay by following this process:

Step 1 - Underline the topic

The first thing you need to do is understand the provided subject. Whether the subject is given by a teacher or you have picked it up yourself, it is important to understand it deeply before writing. It will help in understanding how to build and approach an argument from different angles. As a result, you will be able to write a more concise and proper essay.

Example:

We will take the following subject as an example and continue writing about it during the whole process:

“The importance of early childhood education.”

Step 2 – Create an Outline:

Now, create an outline according to the topic The outline contains all the main points or headings you’re going to write about. It starts with the introduction and continues to the end. Making an outline helps get a general sense of the topics that should be included in the essay. It stops from deviating from the main subject and helps cover all the main points.

Example:

Here’s what an outline of this topic might look like:

Step 2 – Build an argument:

Now, it is time to build an argument according to the title. Your whole written work will try to give evidence and data to prove your argument valid. Building an argument totally depends on the student. It is based on their intuition, intellect, and personal views and opinions about a certain topic. So, build an argument that you think covers the topic perfectly.

Example:

The argument for this article will be based on the topic discussed above.

“Early childhood education builds the entire character of a child. A child’s brain is more open to learning making early education necessary for building cognitive and social skills.”

Step 3 – Write an introduction:

After building the argument, write an introduction. It should offer glimpses of the main points you will discuss in the write-up. The secret to crafting the ideal essay introduction is to make it brief and interesting. Otherwise, the reader might not read the rest of the essay.

Example:

According to the subject and argument I’ve discussed earlier, here’s what its introduction will look like:

Step 3 – Write the body:

Now the real fun begins. After the introduction, it’s time to start writing about the rest of your outline. It is the biggest part of the essay where you add your ideas and analysis. All the other data like infographics (if required) are also added here.

The key to writing a perfect body is to go in a flow. Carry your main argument and write about it step-by-step. Cover all of its important points with proper coherence. Also, try to use impactful words and sentences to deliver your ideas with influence.

Example:

The body example will be the same as mentioned above.

Step 4 – Write conclusion:

Finally, it is time to finalize the whole essay by writing a proper conclusion. As I mentioned earlier, this part will conclude the whole essay by explaining how all the given details support your argument to be true. Just like the introduction, the conclusion is also written shortly.

Here’s what the conclusion of the topic we’re discussing will look like:

Step 5 – Revision:

Once everything is finalized, review the whole essay to spot any grammatical mistakes or ignored points. It is an important step that you should follow before submitting the work. You should also take the assistance of any friend or family member here. Ask them to read out your work and take their honest opinions. Then, make changes if required and then submit the essay to your teacher.

Conclusion:

To sum it up, writing an essay as a beginner can be a little confusing. It is a written piece of information that requires careful elaboration of one’s points of view. So, the writer has to carry out the topic carefully through the whole writing procedure.

However, by following a simple set of guidelines that I’ve mentioned above, you can write a great essay on any topic without any issues. Just write in a flow and explain your points comprehensively to have a positive impact on the reader.
